The Six Conditions for Building Leadership Capability

The Leadership Capability System identifies six organizational conditions that shape

how effectively an organization develops and sustains leadership capability.

Leadership Definition

A shared understanding of what it means to be a leader here.

Leadership Practice

Opportunities to apply learning in real work, receive feedback, and build capability through experience.

Behavior Standards & Expectations                      Clear, observable expectations for how leaders lead.

Integrated Talent Systems & Processes                Talent processes and practices that reinforce leadership expectations.

Leadership Learning

Learning that builds the knowledge, shared language, and mental models leaders need.

Accountability

Consistent reinforcement of leadership expectations over time.

Building Leadership Judgment

At the center of the Leadership Capability System is discernment: the ability to exercise sound judgment when the right course of action isn't obvious.

Leaders rarely operate in situations with one clear answer. They have to weigh competing priorities, adapt to context, make tradeoffs, and decide how to act.

The six conditions work together to help leaders build and apply that judgment so they can make better decisions even when the situation is complex, ambiguous, or changing.

What This Diagnostic Measures

The diagnostic asks you to consider how consistently each of the six conditions exists in your organization today.

Your responses will indicate the maturity of each condition across four levels:

Absent
The condition is largely missing or undefined.

Inconsistent
Elements exist, but they vary significantly across leaders, teams, or situations.

Established
The condition is clearly defined and generally applied, though some inconsistency remains.

Embedded
The condition is consistently applied and reinforced across the organization.

Your results will show where the conditions for building leadership capability

are strongest and where gaps may be limiting your leadership development efforts.
